Transformative meeting technology engages event professionals simultaneously across time zones

Our hottest feature in 2017 thus far had no Hollywood celebrities. There were no otherworldly beings, or even exploding sports cars. In collaboration with EventMobi, the National Speakers Bureau, and Freeman Audio Visual Canada, our preferred national AV partner, we hosted 550 influencers and meeting planners, in six Cineplex movie theatres across Canada to experience new event technologies in our untraditional—but quintessential—gathering spaces.

Presented live in Toronto at the Scotiabank Theatre, the affair was filmed by Freeman Audio Visual Canada, live streamed to our locations in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, and Winnipeg, and then archived for on-demand viewing by attendees in Vancouver later that day.

“We wanted to stream coast to coast because we wanted to show the ability of our technology and our locations to connect people, and that you can deliver the convenience of having the same message delivered at the same time across multiple time zones,” explained Darlene Stewart, our executive director of the Groups & Events division at Cineplex. This makes good use of our massive real estate during non-operating hours and times when auditoriums are available for events.

Ensuring our guests were active participants, rather than passive spectators of the event, EventMobi customized its MTGTECH2017 event app to provide the registration platform, an integrated Twitter feed and surveys, in advance of the meeting. During presentations, the audience at each location was invited to participate in polling, facilitated by the multifaceted app downloaded onto their mobile devices. Attendees were dazzled to see their aggregated results from across the country, displayed live on the big screen as they made their selections.

Enlightening the audience about the ways in which technology is transforming meetings and events, keynote speaker Jesse Hirsh, futurist and digital strategist gave an informative and animated presentation, followed by a panel discussion featuring representatives from each of the event sponsors. EventMobi’s app enabled attendees to upload their questions and collectively vote on the questions of most interest to be posed earliest to panellists.

Hirsh said to the audience, “…it’s very rare that we have moments like we’re having now, where we experience a shared reality, where our shared attention is part of a single experience...”

We wrapped up the event with fun, interactive demonstrations of our new offerings Big Screen Team Building and Gaming Tournaments which feature video games that foster collaboration, cooperation and communication among colleagues during meetings. Additional hands-on technology demos were available before and after the main event at the “Knowledge Café” exhibits in the theatres’ lobbies.

When the event concluded, Carrie Jackson, our director of sales for the Groups & Events team was thrilled with the feedback she received from meeting professionals who participated, including the following comments: “I had no idea you could do that,” “I really hadn’t thought of that before” and “Oh, my gosh, of course you have theatres across the country—this is how I can bring my team together without flying them.” Did you miss out on experience? Not to worry—we’ve got you covered with an archived online recording of the entire event, courtesy of our friends at Freeman Audio Visual Canada.
