Moody marsh vibes, an Oscar-winning producer and a murder mystery that will keep us guessing to the very end? Sign us up! Where the Crawdads Sing is finally hitting theatres this Friday, July 15th and we can’t wait to see what all the hype is about.

The film follows an abandoned young girl named Kya who grows up in the marshlands of North Carolina and later becomes a suspect in a murder investigation. To get you prepared for one of the most anticipated movies of the summer we’ve compiled five things you need to know below.

1. The film is based on a best-selling book

Where the Crawdads Sing is based on a 2018 best-selling book of the same name by American author Delia Owens. Described as a coming-of-age tale and crime thriller, readers were so captivated by the story of the “Marsh Girl” that the book was on The New York Times bestselling list for more than 160 weeks total. It’s also one of the best-selling books of all time, selling a whopping 12 million copies to date.

2. The film is produced by Reese Witherspoon

There’s no doubt that Where the Crawdads Sing being included on Reese’s Book Club had something to do with the book becoming a global best-seller. The book was included on the Oscar-winning actress’ famous list in September 2018 and quickly gained a huge following of fans. It was announced later that year that Reese’s production company Hello Sunshine would produce the upcoming feature film adaptation. She’s also been posting numerous pictures and videos from the set.

3. The film features an exciting cast of up and comers

Rising star Daisy Edgar-Jones takes on the lead role of Kya, fresh off her role as Marianne Sheridan in the miniseries Normal People. The role earned her nominations for both a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. She’ll next appear in another TV miniseries, an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s book, Under the Banner of Heaven. From what we’ve seen of her so far, she is one to watch. She’s joined by another hot new actor Harris Dickinson, who recently starred in The King’s Man. He plays Chase Andrews and Taylor John-Smith plays Tate Walker. The film also stars David Strathairn, Michael Hyatt and Sterling Macer, Jr.

4. It was filmed in Louisiana

While Where the Crawdads Sing is set in the marshlands of North Carolina, the movie adaptation was actually filmed in Louisiana in and around New Orleans. The city of Houma (about an hour southwest of New Orleans) stood in for the fictional town of Barkley Cove in the 1960s. As someone who grew up in both New Orleans and Nashville, Witherspoon has said she loved how the book was a love letter to the South and that really resonated with her. We’re sure the film will also benefit being seen through the eyes of a “local.”

5. Taylor Swift wrote a song for the film

Taylor Swift has revealed she’s a huge fan of the book and knew she wanted to contribute a song as soon as she heard a film adaptation was on its way. The result is Carolina, a song she describes as “haunting” and “ethereal” that will match the mesmerizing story.

Turns out Daisy Edgar-Jones is just as pumped to have Swift’s song included telling Elle UK, "If I'd told my younger self that Taylor Swift would do a song for something I'm in … bonkers."
