A new behind-the-scenes featurette reveals how The Fall Guy set a new Guinness World Record for the most cannon rolls ever accomplished in a car has been hailed in early reactions as a love letter to the stunt community. The upcoming David Leitch seems to highlight just how integral stunt performers are to movie productions.

The Fall Guy's record-breaking cannon roll stunt is spotlighted in an action-packed new featurette for the film. Ryan Gosling leads The Fall Guy's cast as Colt Seavers, a stuntman working on his ex's big-budget movie who must use his action hero skills to rescue the film's missing star. The film, which is directed by David Leitch and also stars Emily Blunt as Jody, Colt's ex, has been hailed in the first reviews as a highly effective action comedy with some standout stunts.

Now, ahead of The Fall Guy's release date later this spring, Universal Pictures shares a new behind-the-scenes featurette, revealing the cannon roll stunt from the movie that set a new Guinness World Record. Check it out below:

As revealed in the clip, the first attempt at the roll didn't quite go to plan, so Gosling's stunt double, Ryan Holladay, suited up for another try. While the previous world record for a cannon roll was 7 rolls, Holladay ended up completing eight and a half.

How The Fall Guy Celebrates Stunt Work

David Leitch's New Movie Is A Love Letter To Stunt Performers

Ryan Gosling doing finger guns as Colt in The Fall GuyLeitch's filmography as a director now includes movies like Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train. He also co-directed the first John Wick alongside Chad Stahelski. Like Stahelski, Leitch is a former stunt performer, and he evidently uses this experience to inform his directorial work.

Stahelski would go on to solo direct the subsequent three movies in the John Wick franchise.

The Fall Guy, however, seems to be capitalizing on Leitch's stunt history like never before. Early reactions to The Fall Guy hail the movie as a love letter to the stunt community, with a big focus on practical action. In addition to featuring some bold stunts, the movie also features Gosling starring as a stuntman. The movie, then, could use Colt to provide a closer look at the lives of people like Holladay as they help to bring big action sequences to life.

Stunt performers are a crucial part of most action movies, but their work is often intentionally made to look as if it was accomplished by somebody else. Due to clever camera angles and digital face replacements, it can be easy to forget just how crucial stunt performers are to bringing bold action sequences to life. The Fall Guy seems to be shining a light on this invaluable group, and the cannon roll world record is evidently just a taste of the type of action audiences can expect from the film.
